Insurers Seek Warehouse Fire Safety Law Changes
Currently the Association of British Insurers (ABI) are pursuing a change in UK Law that will see the government make operation fire sprinkler systems compulsory in warehouses larger than 2,000m2 . According to figures released by the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association, less than a quarter of warehouses between 2,000 and 10,000 m2 have an adequate system fitted. The ABI's move has found the support of many fire brigades from across the country.
Having a fully functional sprinkler system can limit property damage, prevent potential injury or loss of life. Therefore, it would be beneficial for business owners to consider having them within their warehouses and could also help keep future premiums down. At present the average payout for commercial fire claims are in excess of £25,000 as a result any preventive measure that could be taken by business owners is welcomed by the insurance industry. James Dalton, a key figure at ABI and their campaign has commented that moves should be made to change the current guideline and make them compulsory for every high risk building in the UK.
